WILLIAM Wilberforce, pictured, currently remembered in the new film Amazing Grace, was not only involved in bringing the slave trade to an end – he was also a founder of the RSPCA.
Set up on 16 June 1824, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals grew quickly and soon recruited uniformed inspectors to investigate animal cruelty allegations. In fact, the first RSPCA inspectors were appointed before the Metropolitan Police Force was set up.

Queen Victoria was so impressed with the Society’s work, she allowed it to use ‘Royal’ in its title.

Now the Society employs 323 inspectors who investigate allegations of animal cruelty and 146 animal collection officers who rescue animals in need of help. Through a network of branches and the national charity, the Society also runs 51 animal centres, four animal hospitals and three wildlife centres.

The RSPCA works tirelessly for better treatment of animals – following the example set by William Wilberforce, who went to Pocklington School, all those years ago. As a great humanitarian, Wilberforce knew that the capacity to care for animals is wholly compatible with caring for human beings
