Further to a recent article in the Post regarding land in the town being earmarked for possible development, the secretary of the Pocklington Allotments Association and myself visited Francis Scaife sports centre in order to look at the future plans.
Particularly, we were interested with the provision of further allotments in all this new proposed development.
The reason being that at the moment we have over 150 people working plots on the mile site with well over 50 on the waiting list. If there are to be an additional 1,079 houses to be built then we can assume that a number of the new occupiers will require an allotment.
We all know that all modern development does not provide gardens, you can make your own conclusions over this.
We approached the acting officer on this subject and said that allotments come under the heading of open spaces and that the East Riding Council has not released the plans for this, and asked if they would be announced in the near future.
The allotments association have now decided to rent out starter plots - quarter-sized plots- to try and reduce the people on the waiting list.
We have found from experience that a half plots can be too large for some people. If we find this to be successful we will carry on with the scheme.
