Your article: WI group has a go at sugar craft

At the October meeting of the Market Weighton WI Helen from Fashionable Fondants attended to give a talk.

A a short business meeting was held first where details of the group’s Christmas lunch were discussed. Then a presentation was made to Elaine, a member who is getting married this month.

Helen then gave a talk illustrated with slides to show how Fashionable Fondants began.

She initially joined a friend and went to evening classes for cake decorations. Her friend dropped out but Helen was hooked. Next she went to Hull College for a sugar craft course. Again she was inspired and later became a lecturer for the same course.

She was asked by friends and then by businesses to make special cakes for them. She made a wedding cake for a customer who wanted a fairy castle wedding cake and another for someone who wanted a model of the Pride of Hull ferry. The slides showed how fastidious she was at getting the detail perfect. We were all very impressed.

After a break for tea and cakes the group returned to their tables. Helen provided them with sugar paste and demonstrated how they could make their own models of a cat.

Helen showed the WI members each stage for them to follow. There was much laughter as they tried to copy Helen’s instructions with varying degrees of success.

Although Helen insisted that there was no “right or wrong” some of our creations were not very cat–like.

However, everyone enjoyed themselves and felt they could improve with practice.

Sue, the Market Weighton WI president, thanked Helen for a very enjoyable and entertaining evening.

Market Weighton WI meets on the second Thursday of each month in the Community Hall. Contact Sue Young on 01430 873194 for further information.
