Karate kids have been honing their martial arts skills at a club in Pocklington.

Youngsters aged from 4-7-years-old and another group of children aged from 8-12-year-old attended Pocklington Karate Centre’s Tiger Tots classes last Saturday and received training from coach Oliver Willison at the Scout Hut on Burnby Lane.

Oliver has been involved with the club for the past 18 years, but his parents Frank and Joan founded the centre in 1974 and have been helping to run the club ever since.

As well as the Tiger Tots classes on Saturday mornings, Pocklington Karate Centre runs classes on Monday and Thursday evenings for adults and juniors.

Karate ace Oliver, who won four European gold medals last year, says the club has seen an increase in members recently.

He said: “There was a good turnout last Saturday.

“Over the last couple of months we’ve started getting more members.

“It gets the children away from computer games and keeps them active and helps them burn energy off.

“It gives them more self-discipline. We don’t teach them discipline it is self-discipline we encourage in themselves to harbour.”

If you are interested in attending any of the training sessions, call Oliver on 07897 335959.
