Crowds flocked to Market Weighton to enjoy a Giant party, which was attended by a very special guest.
Actor Mark Addy, star of fantasy dramas Game of Thrones and Atlantis, was on hand to open proceedings at the third annual Giant Community Day last Sunday (12 July).
Organised by Market Weighton Town Team’s Community Day Committee, the event provided fun for all the family, with a variety of activities and attractions taking place on the High Street.
One of the main attractions was an inflatable obstacle course, which proved popular with families.
There was also performances from the Driffield Silver Band and the morris dancing group, The Shiptonthorpe Ravens. The Army Cadets brought along a climbing wall, and there were also children’s rides, singers, craft and general stalls. An exhibition celebrating weddings of all ages was held at All Saints’ Church and there was a children’s entertainer in St John’s Methodist Church. In addition, shops were open for people who fancied a bit of retail therapy.
Lionel Cashin, a member of Community Day Committee, said: “It was the most successful day we have had. We were very lucky to get Mark Addy, who opened it. He was filming in Huddersfield in the afternoon. He couldn’t have been more lovely. Anybody who wanted to spend time with him, he spent time with.”
He added: “The Army Cadets were on the High Street at 7.45am in the morning putting everything up. It is great they did it and the Community Day Committee are very thankful for their help.”
Before the event got underway on Sunday, a Harley Davidson charity bike ride, called Hog on the Humber, passed through the town.
The Giant Community Day is a free-to-enter event held to recapture a family and community spirit in Market Weighton and for people to enjoy the High Street.
