A SPECIALIST delicatessen and off-licence in Bubwith has been short-listed for a national award.

The Jug & Bottle, on Main Street, has put itself in the frame to win Best Independent Cider Retailer and Best Independent Beer Retailer in the National Drinks Retailing Awards.

Owned by husband and wife Doug and Louise Smith, The Jug & Bottle was winner of the ‘Neighbourhood Off-Licence of the Year’ category at 2009 ceremony and also won the Chairman’s Award for Enhancing the Built Heritage of the East Riding of Yorkshire the same year.

Last year they were named by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) as the best retailer in the York area for bottled beer.

Opened in 2002, they boast that less than one per cent of their stock can be found in regular supermarkets.

Louise said: “We are delighted to have made the short-list again and in two categories that we are so passionate about the products that we sell.

“Not only have we worked really hard in the last year to beat the recession but we also have some innovative approaches to the stocking and selling of our beers, real ales, ciders and perry.

“Obviously, we would like to win one of the categories as it will signify a huge achievement, but even being on the short-list will help keep The Jug & Bottle in the spotlight in these tough trading conditions.”

The 2011 Drinks Retailing Awards will be held at London’s Dorchester Hotel on 1 February.
