On Sunday 1 May and Sunday 5 June, Pocklington School hosted the inaugural Adult and Junior Triathlons, sponsored and run by Gary and Jan Kilsby of camphippo.co.uk.

Competitors came from across Yorkshire with 35 adult competitors and 55 juniors.

The school was the main centre for the events, making use of the dining hall for registration, the swimming pool and Fenton’s Field for the cycle transition area, along with the beautiful surrounding countryside for the cycle and run phases of the adult event. The adult triathlon benefited from a cool morning, with an occasional glimpse of sunshine – perfect weather for the competitors but not so much for the volunteers who kindly helped to marshal and co-ordinate proceedings.

The triathlon began with a 400yard swim, followed by a 14 mile cycle, finishing with a 4 mile run.

As this was the inaugural event, the winning times now set the standard for the future:

Overall male winner: 1hr 7mins 59 secs

Overall female winner: 1hr 14mins 34 secs

In contrast, the junior event took place on a very warm day and for quite a few competitors this was their first introduction to triathlon, all did very well and should be congratulated on their effort.

The day was enjoyed by competitors, organisers and volunteers with many competitors keen to return next year. The referee appointed by the British Triathlon Federation was very complimentary, suggesting it was the best children’s triathlon he had witnessed in some years.
