A Leading East Yorkshire free range egg co-operative is celebrating the achievements of its members by launching an awards scheme.

The directors of Bewholme based EggSell announced the winners of the inaugural awards at its annual Christmas Dinner at the Trout Inn, Wansford.

The EggSell ‘Top Egg’ award is for the flock with the largest number of eggs per hen to 72 weeks delivered into the packing centre and was won by John and Gill Smith of Stape near Pickering.

The ‘Good Egg’ award recogises an EggSell Producer who has gone above and beyond to promote EggSell and the Free Range Egg Industry and was won by Andrew Hall from Wilton Gate House Farm, Pickering.

EggSell’s Managing Director, Tom Elliott said: “We have a loyal and hard-working group of members and we wanted to acknowledge and reward their achievements with our own awards scheme. Andrew, John and Gill are worthy winners of these first awards.”

2015 has been an unprecedented year for the number of awards that EggSell members have won.

Andrew Hall, who has been a member of EggSell since 2008 was awarded Highly Commended in the Health and Welfare Award at the Pig & Poultry Marketing awards in June, he was a runner up in the NSF Assured Egg Farm of the Year awards and was also shortlisted for the Food and Farming Sustainable Farmer Award in the same competition. Andrew’s award-winning year culminated with the prize for Small Producer of the Year at the BFREPA awards in November that was presented by BBC Countryfile’s Adam Henson.

Poultry Feed Specialist Roger Lythe was also a winner at the BFREPA (British Free Range Egg Producers Association) awards. Roger has supported EggSell members since 2007 and has served the poultry industry for almost sixty years. His standing in the industry was recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication, expertise and professionalism to the poultry industry.
