NEARLY 100 new allotments have been made available by Market Weighton Town Council and applications for them are growing fast.
The Holme Road Allotments consists of 95 allotment plots within a 7.6 acre field.
So far, 18 plots have been taken since last week and the council have over 50 applications still to process with more being sent in all the time.
The field where the allotments are now based came up for sale last year and the previous Mayor of Market Weighton, councillor Marian Frith, had the idea of turning the field into allotments. The council agreed to bid for the field and were successful.
Current mayor Coun Peter Hemmerman said: “It is very satisfying to have seen the allotments taken up so quickly. We were aware that many people want to grow their own vegetables and do not have the space in modern properties to do so.
“The health benefits of fresh produce are well documented and anyone who has tasted vegetables cooked straight from the ground as against supermarket produce will know what I mean.
“I also believe it is a sensible use of the council’s reserves at a time when bank interest on savings is so poor, it should prove a good investment for the future and provide a small income for the council to use for the benefit of the community.”
