RESIDENTS in Market Weighton, which is fast running out of burial plots, will face the choice of being cremated to stay local – or buried miles away from the town when they die.
The town’s cemetery, on Holme Road, has less than 10 plots left in addition to the spaces that have already been bought by residents who are still alive.
Mayor of Market Weighton, councillor Marian Frith, says the town council have been trying to find a solution to the problem since 2005.
She said: “We have been aware of this for a long time and even before I was mayor previously. The previous mayor was looking for cemetery extensions.”
She says the difficulty for the town council is that a lot of spare land in Market Weighton has been allocated for housing development as part of East Riding Council’s draft Local Plan.
