Charles Rowley was born in Pocklington in 1879, son of William, a wheelright from Allerthorpe.

In 1891, Charles was still at school, but his older brother William was a tailor’s apprentice, and Aunt Martha was a dressmaker in George Street.

At the age of 21, Charles went to live with Aunt Martha, and in the 1901 census he was a shown to be a tailor.

In 1905, he married a Scarborough girl, Edith Annie Wright in Pocklington. In the 1911 census he is a master tailor in 11 Market Street, with his wife Edith Annie and his son Harry.
