Work on a controversial £3 million flood defence project in Market Weighton finally began this week as workmen moved in to assess the site.

The work at Mill Beck has become a divisive issue within the town with some, including mayor Peter Hemmerman, claiming the expensive scheme does not add up.

Although there are some in Market Weighton who question whether the work is needed, the Environment Agency claims it is legally obliged to carry it out to comply with the 1975 Reservoir Act
