May 31 1982 was a memorable day for me –and for many people in Yorkshire. I caught a train early in the morning from my home town of Bridlington.

There were many extra trains scheduled for that day to cope with the demand, as well as hundreds of coaches from many towns. They were all were heading for the same venue.

Our train arrived in York station mid-morning, and we were caught up in the flow of people from different platforms.

We were guided through the streets and walked on the roads because all traffic had been stopped along the route.
