A RECORD breaking number of people turned out to this year’s annual Kiplingcotes Derby.

On Thursday 21 March hundreds of spectators turned out to enjoy the sunshine and place their bets on the 13 contestants.

Carolyn Bales, 34, of Malton, was first past the finishing post on her horse, inauspiciously named Woteva.

She said: “I can’t believe I’ve won, they set off so quickly and were about 30-lengths in front of me but I took a different route from everyone else.

“It was a challenging course and I am over the moon.”

The 494th annual derby, which is said to be the oldest flat horse race in the country, is run over four-miles from Etton to Londesborough Wold.

The winner took a £50 prize while the runner-up was given the entrance money from the other contestants.

Trustee of the race Guy Stephenson said: “I do not think we have ever seen as many people here before. There is a great atmosphere and a good crowd.”
