Campaigners working to re-open the Beverley to York rail line have welcomed the initiative by northern cities to call for better rail links.

The Minsters’ Rail Campaign supports the measures but cautions against limiting the links to those between major cities alone.

Campaigners say many thousands of commuters travel to work in cities from rural towns and villages but better rail links between cities will not help them.

They also claim that enlarging road links will only add to city parking problems and commuter frustration as the outskirts of cities and major towns will become more congested if more lanes are added to inter-city roads.
