Police bid to catch bridge vandals
POLICE have launched an investigation in a bid to trace vandals who have repeatedly damaged an historic bridge in Wansford - causing more than £6,000 of damage.
Coping stones and brickwork have been removed and hurled into the water below.
In the latest attack, it is thought the vandals used a crowbar to prize masonry from the bridge, which will have to be closed for a period after September 17 for it to be repaired.
Now police are monitoring the Grade 2 listed bridge in a bid to catch those responsible for the destruction.
The bridge stands just off the B1429 from Driffield at the junction which leads to Skerne. It has three supporting arches and spans the River Hull.
PC Rachel Ramsden, of Driffield Neighbourhood policing team, said: “Unfortunately, the bridge is being slowly being destroyed by vandals.
“They have approached the bridge at least four times over the year and, using physical force, removed several coping stones and bricks from the archway of bridge.
“The stones have been thrown into the river below. The bridge has been inspected and found to be a solid construction and the mortar sound. The damage has been deliberate.
“Repairs to the bridge will be very expensive due to the construction and methods that have to be adhered to due to it being grade 2 listed. It is estimated that the cost will be in excess of £6,000.”
The Chairman of Skerne and Wansford Parish council, Ian Lamble, has had to deal with previous problems regarding the damage to this bridge.
He has spoken to several people in area but nothing has been seen or heard as the damage has been caused overnight.
The bridge is not over looked by any properties and there is no CCTV in the area. Mr Lamble has been in contact with the neighborhood Policing Team at Driffield and together they are appealing for any information regarding the damage to the bridge. If you can help with the enquiries please phone Humberside Police on 101 and quote crime reference CS/1928170/2012.
