Piotr’s Olympic coin among the most collectable in years

A UNIQUE coin designed by a local villager is among a range of 50p pieces celebrating London 2012 that are expected to be the most collectable commemorative coins in over 40 years.

Bielby resident Piotr Powaga, 37, submitted his design for the archery coin in 2009 and it is one of 29 - with one for each Olympic and Paralympic sport - that were released into circulation in October last year to mark the London Games.

According to their manufacturer - The Royal Mint - over 70 per cent of the 29,363,613 coins produced will be hoarded by people keen to collect a free souvenir of London 2012. This is more than any other commemorative coin since Britain converted to decimal currency in 1971.
