A student from Pocklington has been crowned a winner of a national photography competition, beating almost 100 others to first place.
Joanne Coates, 24, photographed community groups across Yorkshire, including York-based Greenfields Community Garden, and London to win the contest organised by Skipton Building Society.
Joanne, who has been studying BA Photography at the University of the Arts in London for two-and-a-half years, said: “It was such an inspiration to be involved in the project.
“It was an amazing opportunity to work with the volunteers of the groups and to see the hard work and dedication they put in to make their local community a better place.”
The judges unanimously chose Joanne after being so impressed by Joanne’s efforts to photograph not only one, but six community groups.
Stacey Stothard, Corporate Communications Manager at Skipton Building Society, said: “We really admired how Joanne had used the Christmas period to photograph some of the groups, and how her incredible artistic talents shone through in the uniqueness of the photos.
“We felt she really encapsulated the sense of community spirit, which is what this whole campaign is about.”
