Overnight closures for busy bridge

THE bridge on the A166 through Stamford Bridge will be closed overnight from 25 June for five nights.

It is to allow for repairs to a large section of masonry that was damaged when a car crashed into the historic bridge last November.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council had to wait until the spring to carry out the work, due to the nature of the building materials needed, which cannot be applied when there is a risk of freezing temperatures.

The bridge will close between the hours of 9pm and 6am, but will be open during the day to minimise disruption to residents and businesses.

A diversion route will be set up directing traffic coming from the east on to B roads and the A614, with traffic from the west being sent to the A1079.

The single carriageway bridge over the River Derwent is the main route in and out of Stamford Bridge and is heavy with traffic at peak times, but the overnight closures should avoid disruption to commuting motorists.

The driver of the Ford Ka that crashed into the bridge – a woman believed to be in her twenties – escaped uninjured but was treated for shock at the time of the crash.
