On the History Trail: Canal prospered up to 1847

Pocklington Canal at Melbourne

Pocklington Canal at Melbourne

In 1775, a canal opened to Market Weighton and trade in Pocklington was adversely affected.

Townsfolk decided links to Pocklington needed improvement, and in September 1777 notices were posted for the next session of Parliament that an act was to be applied for to create a navigable canal from the River Derwent to Pocklington.

It was not until 1815 that the act was obtained.

Full feature in this Thursday’s paper (26 December).
