New Woldgate Head of Sixth Form to boost student confidence

THE new Head of Sixth Form at Woldgate College in Pocklington is determined to give students at the school more belief in their own abilities.

Amanda Longstaff took on the role last September, after previously holding the position of Woldgate’s Head of Year 8, and since then has noticed an unjustified lack of confidence among some students, which she wants to change.

Making sure students are fully prepared for university or employment is another target she has set herself.

She said: “In terms of my aims, I suppose I ultimately want a friendly and fun atmosphere within the sixth form but with a strong work ethic for students to achieve and to ‘be the best they can’.

“By having high expectations, but offering lots of support and encouragement, I hope to boost our students’ confidence and belief in their own abilities so they are prepared for whatever their next steps are after further education.

“Whilst the academic side is very important, I also feel that students have to be prepared for an ever-changing world and our variety of enrichment opportunities have something for everyone, whether it be gaining extra qualifications or just enjoying different activities.

“The transition from being a pupil at the end of Year 11 to ultimately being an independent student at university or having the right skills to take up employment and further training is a crucial part of a teenager’s life. By offering the right guidance at the right time, myself and my tutors can hopefully ensure they are following the right path for their initial goals in life.”

Since September, Ms Longstaff has managed to improve attendance figures for post-16 students at the school, a trend she hopes to continue.

She is also keen to provide sixth formers with extra responsibilities.

“We want students to have a say on how things are done,” Ms Longstaff explained.

“We have a prefect team of seven. They have been instrumental in the review of homework policy across all year groups. We’ve asked them to talk to students and report 
back.”
