A new dedicated adoption hotline in the East Riding is set to be staffed by a group of volunteer adopters.

Drawing on first-hand experience, the volunteers will be on hand to answer any initial queries from people seeking further information about the adoption process.

Being Family, the new brand name for the Yorkshire and Humber Adoption Consortium – of which East Riding of Yorkshire Council is a member – has set up the helpline to answer queries from potential adopters across the region.

The confidential helpline (0300 222 5934) is run from 10am to 6pm five days a week, Monday to Friday. Many of the advisers have adopted children and are happy to talk to potential adopters in the East Riding about the process and how rewarding the experience is.

Nic Haughton, manager of Being Family, said: “Our helpline team have been specially selected for their insider knowledge of adoption. We want potential adopters to be able to talk to qualified members of Being Family with the benefit of their own experience, who understand the process and can talk about how life changing the process is. Our aim is to make the early stages of becoming an adopter more integrated, so ultimately we increase the number of adopters in the Yorkshire and Humber region.”

Across the Yorkshire and Humber region 800 children are awaiting adoption and this number is expected to rise this year.

The East Riding adoption team would welcome enquiries from potential adopters from all sectors of the community.

Ian Wilson, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s adoption manager, said: “We really need people who can offer a child or sibling group a loving and supportive family for life – people who can help a child recover from the reasons why they came into care and can help them go on to thrive in a new family.”
