A great grandmother had 100 reasons to celebrate as she marked a milestone birthday.

Jenny Benson, who lives at Derwent House Care Home, in Kexby, turned 100 recently and celebrated the occasion at the home with a birthday bash with some of her family.

The Sheriff of York Brian Watson and Sheriff’s Lady Marcia Watson were also in attendance and presented Mrs Benson with a bouquet of flowers.

Yvonne Bowman, activities co-ordinator at Derwent House, said: “We had a big party for her. There was about 30 family members here, from her son to her great-grandchildren. She had a great day.”

Mrs Benson has two sons, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

Born in County Durham on 1 February 1914, Mrs Benson moved to York, aged 16, to work at St Olave’s School.

She then went into service with the Harding family who used to live in High Ousegate, York, before marrying her late husband James and devoting her time to her family.

In her later years, she was in warden controlled accommodation before moving to Derwent House three years ago, where she was one of the first residents.
