Pocklington residents are being urged to stay vigilant after a number of people have reported receiving fraudulent telephone calls from people claiming to be from the town council.
At least 10 such calls have been reported to Pocklington Town Council and the police have been made aware of the situation.
Complainants say the caller, who pretends to be from the Town Council, offers to help them to claim compensation for accidents they may have suffered.
Nobody has said that the caller has tried to extract bank details yet, but the town council has said matters involving claiming compensation would not usually involve them.
A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “Anyone who is concerned about the legitimacy of a call they receive ether by telephone or in person should report their concerns to police.
“It is not advisable to disclose any personal details over the telephone if there is doubt about who you are speaking to.”
A spokesperson for Pocklington Town Council said if people have any concerns over the legitimacy of callers claiming to be from the council they should call then office on 01759 304851 to check.
