A BEVERLEY primary school made history this week when it celebrated its Golden Jubilee.

St John of Beverley RC School marked the 50th anniversary of its location on the current site with a unique celebration of Mass at Beverley Minster.

Mass was said by the Bishop of Middlesbrough, Bishop Terence Patrick Drainey - the first time since the Reformation 500 years earlier that a Catholic Bishop had celebrated Mass in the Minster.

Earlier in the day, the Bishop had joined staff and pupils for lunch.

The school, which opened at its site in Wilberforce Crescent on October 2 1962, moved there from its previous home behind St John’s RC Church in North Bar Without, where it had been based since 1860.

When it opened at the present site it had just four classrooms, and now has seven classrooms to accommodate the 181 pupils on the roll.

The grounds have also been extended, and now include a peace garden, where staff and governors have provided a new bench to mark the Jubilee.

Pupils have also taking part in the celebrations with a display of school life from the past to the present day, including log books and registers from days gone by.

Headteacher Theresa Rogerson said the school had been given a warm welcome by the Vicar and staff of the Minster, who had been extremely helpful in making arrangements for the history-making service.

She said it was fitting that the service was held in the Minster as it contains the Tomb of the school’s Saint, St John of Beverley, who died in 721.

“It has been a tremendous week, it is a real privilege to be here anyway as headteacher, but it is an added privilege to be here in the Jubilee year,” she said.
