A grandmother from Goodmanham has raised thousands of pounds for charity by competing in a horse race in York, despite the fact that until this January she had never even sat on a race horse.

Froot Atkins, 56, finished in fourth place in the Macmillan Charity Race at York Racecourse last Saturday, in which she was the oldest jockey in the race.

Froot, a primary school teaching assistant with three children and a grandchild, was inspired by watching the 1m 1f race last year and decided to don her breeches and join 11 other amateurs competing in this year’s race.

Full story in this week’s (19 June) Pocklington Post.
