Exhibit of the Week: Lakes built for use by Major Stewart for fishing

The lakes at Burnby Hall Gardens today

The lakes at Burnby Hall Gardens today

Our artefact this week is the biggest one we have here at Burnby Hall Gardens, the Upper and Lower Lakes. For today’s visitor, these provide a beautiful location to walk around and to enjoy the Gardens.

Our younger visitors love to feed the ever-hungry carp and roach, and the Hardy Water lilies, when in full bloom between June and August, are a joy to behold.

Interestingly though, the lakes were not originally intended for an ornamental purpose. They were actually designed and built for use by Major Percy Stewart as a location for his fishing.

Full feature in this Thursday’s paper (30 January).
