A SELFLESS Pocklington pensioner is gearing up for a once in a lifetime opportunity after being chosen to carry the Olympic flame.

Erica Hughes, 72, of Algarth Rise, will take part in the torch relay when it passes through Hull next Monday.

The mother of four and grandmother of five, who has trained and worked as a nurse health visitor and community nurse tutor, was nominated for the honour by her daughter Sarah.

Over the past 20 years Erica has undertaken lots of voluntary work, both in the UK and abroad, offering her nursing skills to people in need.

Erica is excited about being selected to carry the torch.

She said: “I’m very much looking forward to it. It is a great honour.”

Her voluntary work abroad includes working as a primary health care nurse at a hospital in Tanzania in 1993 and 1998, where she also offered support to Massai communities.

In 2003-04, Erica worked in China for a charity called Caring for China’s Children, helping babies and young children with medical or developmental difficulties.

Eighteen months ago she joined an ear nose and throat (ENT) medical and nursing team from the International Nepal Fellowship charity to provide an ear camp in Nepal.

She has also been a volunteer nurse and purser for the Tall Ships Youth Trust.

Erica, who now works for NHS Professionals, which provides temporary NHS jobs, said: “I consider that I have been very privileged to be able to help these different groups of people.”

She will carry the flame for 300 metres along the streets of Hull, from near The Deep Aquarium to Queen Street, on Monday morning when it arrives in the city.

The following day it will head to York, which is when another Pocklington resident, Wayne Christie, will bear the flame along Racecourse Road.
