On Thursday March 21 East Yorkshire is hosting the world famous Kiplingcotes Derby - the oldest horserace in England.

The race, which has been run over a four mile course just outside the town since 1519, has attracted increasing visitors over recent years such that it now presents a major problems for people, parking and access.

The local authority have ruled that the winning post road can no longer be accessed or used for parking by spectators and will close nearby lay –bys to prevent pedestrians walking on the busy A614.

There will still be some parking at Londesborough Wold farm but muddy conditions could create a problem.

To overcome this the newly formed Market Weighton Town Team have stepped in to provide a free Shuttle Bus Service between the town centre and the racecourse between 10am and 3pm . The bus will collect and drop off from the bus stops outside The Griffin Inn and outside Asda.

The journey to and from the course is around ten minutes each way and the horses assemble near the winning post by 12 o’clock before cantering out to the start at Kiplingcotes. The race itself must be run before 2pm.

In Market Weighton local hostelries, shops and cafes will provide a welcome for visitors to enjoy the towns attractions both before and after the race and are hoping visitors will enjoy the experience of small friendly shops , welcoming eating and drinking places and the homely atmosphere of this small market town at the heart of East Yorkshire.

Apart from the shops, pubs, cafes and the race itself attractions include free parking

(time limited in parts of the town centre), the unique oak statue of Yorkshire Giant William Bradley, the Bradley Trail around a host of interesting and historic buildings and quiet spots to sit and soak up the Yorkshire hospitality.

There are frequent bus services from Hull, York, Beverley and Pocklington to Market Weighton so you are invited to come and spend the day in the town with us and take in this unique racing spectacle.
