Dad faces jail for child sex in ’70s
Christopher Saltmer
AN ENGINEER from Market Weighton is facing up to five years behind bars after admitting child sex offences.
Father-of-two Christopher Saltmer thought he had got away with attempting to rape a seven-year-old girl when he was 15 years old, hoping she would never breathe a word to anyone.
However, the truth came back to haunt him more than 30 years on when the girl went to Humberside Police and told officers he had abused her between the ages of seven and nine.
Saltmer, 51, who is married, initially denied everything to the police when they came knocking at his door. But, on the eve of his trial at Hull Crown Court on Monday 25 February, Saltmer pleaded guilty to four of the original 12 charges.
Saltmer, of Stephen’s Close, admitted attempted rape, two acts of indecency with a child and one indecent assault in Market Weighton.
They all date to the late 1970s and early 1980s.
As Saltmer pleaded guilty, his victim wept in the public gallery.
Crown barrister Megan Reece said the offences Saltmer pleaded guilty to represented a summary of the original charges.
Defence barrister Patrick Palmer told the court: “I ask for a report. He understands he will receive a custodial sentence. You will appreciate this happened very many years ago now.
“The pre-sentence report will assist him, and assist the court on his level of dangerousness.”
Saltmer did not look his victim in the eyes in court. His family sat on the front row of the public gallery.
Judge Jeremy Richardson, QC, ordered Saltmer to stand as he told him: “These are serious crimes, even though they happened a long time ago.
“I make no observations about sentence but you must brace yourself for a substantial prison sentence.
“I make it clear this represents a course of conduct and you will be sentenced on a full facts basis.
“The level of sentence will be determined by a judge at a future date.”
He agreed to allow Saltmer bail to return to Hull Crown Court in four weeks but ordered he should sign on the National Sex Offenders’ Register.
