Benefactor is remembered 189 years after his death for his gift to children
Trustees of the Christopher Eden Foundation, Judy Dickinson, Tony Knight and Jan Davis
A 19th century benefactor whose wealth is still benefitting young people in Beverley has been remembered on the 189th anniversary of his death.
Beverley corn merchant Christopher Eden left £655 10s 11d in his will to promote the education of the poor.
That sum has accumulated over the years, and other charities have been amalgamated with it into a large trust fund from which thousands of young Beverlonians have benefited.
This week three of the Christopher Eden Foundation trustees, Judy Dickinson, Tony Knight and Jan Davis, met in Beverley Minster churchyard to commemorate the anniversary of Christopher Eden’s death by placing a dozen red roses on his tomb.
Recent awards made by the foundation have included grants to students for specialist clothing and equipment, help for young athletes striving for national and Olympic attainment and assistance for educational trips.
The trustees are always sympathetic to young people who fall into sudden hardship during their education or training, and they intend to make the commemoration of this Beverley benefactor an annual event.
The foundation helps young people living in Beverley and surrounding villages, and anyone wanting further details can contact Judy Dickinson on 01964 542593.
