Antiques column: History of dining tables stems all the way back to early Greeks

Please cast your mind back a few weeks, to 25 December to be more exact, and your Christmas dinner.

Whether it was at home, at friends, at a restaurant or wherever, one thing is certain, hidden away underneath that festive table-cloth was a humble dining table, doing what this simply designed piece of furniture has done throughout the centuries.

They may have fallen out of fashion in some households for everyday use but where they have one they come into their own on these big occasions.

The history of dining tables stems all the way back to the early Greeks and Romans and beyond.
