Residents in the area are being encouraged to have their blood pressure taken in Pocklington on Saturday (18 April).
Pocklington and Market Weighton Rotary Club are organising a ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ event from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Arts Centre, on Market Place. This is part of a national campaign by the Stroke Association and Rotary that has tested 150,000 people over the last 10 years. The Rotary club have thanked the Pocklington Group Practice for their support each year.
The Stroke Association believes that strokes can and should be prevented. There are approximately 152,000 strokes every year in the UK.
Stroke is the fourth single largest cause of death in the UK and the largest cause of complex disability in the world. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke, contributing to over 50% of strokes. These strokes could be prevented if high blood pressure was controlled. The Know Your Blood Pressure campaign helps people to understand the link between high blood pressure and stroke, other risk factors for stroke and what they can do to reduce their risk. Booklets will be available at the Arts Centre on Saturday giving more information.
