A grandmother-of-two has raised more than £4,000 for a cancer charity after completing a gruelling bike ride in Cuba.

Gev Nichol, 56, of Fangfoss, pedalled about 260 miles over five days in aid of Women V Cancer along with 60 other female cyclists.

The learning support teacher said: “The terrain was very hilly to say the least. We cycled in temperatures of 35-36 degrees with the humidity in the high 90’s.

“I am very proud of what I have achieved as I only took up cycling back in January of this year, that itself was a challenge.”

Mrs Nichol, who has two children and two grandchildren, was delighted with the funds she raised. She added: “This would not have been possible without peoples generosity and for that I feel very humble and grateful.”

Overall, the group of cyclists raised a staggering £230,000 for Women V Cancer, a charity which covers breast, ovarian and cervical cancer.
