Final preparations are underway at Pocklington Airfield as Wolds Gliding Club gears up to host its 28th National Two-Seater Competition.

The event, starting this weekend, will see pilots given routes to fly and the fastest glider will earn the most points.

Local residents will see lots of glider take-offs and landings as well as the gliders circling in thermals to gain height.

Competition director, Patricia Ridger, said: “The number of entries we have is a little down due to the bad weather the competition has suffered in recent years. But we’re hoping the great summer keeps going a bit longer and gives us a fantastic week of gliding.”

The prize for the winner of this year’s competition is a stay on the UKs largest canal hotel boat, the Wessex Rose, donated by Dave Binney, who runs a new hotel boat business.

Other prizes have been donated by ‘What Comes Naturally’ health foods, Hill Aviation Insurance, Sainsbury’s, the Co-op supermarket and other local businesses.

Two-seater gliders give experienced competition pilots the opportunity to pass on their skills to others.
