EVENT: Hansel and Gretel
VENUE: Pocklington Arts Centre
DATE: Saturday at 2.30pm
Northumberland Theatre Company is hoping to give an audience in East Yorkshire a treat in the new year with its re-worked adaptation of the classic fairytale Hansel and Gretel.
The adaptation, written by Mike Kenny, brings this classic tale into modern times with a gothic twist, to create a play that is funny, scary and exciting for all the family.
The tour will see a talented cast of four take this fantastic fairytale to around 40 rural venues across England and Scotland, with actor Louis Roberts taking on the lead role of Hansel and leading lady Rachel Gay as Gretel.
Playwright Kenny, who described Hansel and Gretel as one of his favourite stories, said: “I think all the best children’s stories are the scary ones.
“This one has two fantastically bad baddies – the mother who abandons the children to starve in the forest, and the gingerbread lady who wants to eat them. It is, of course, a story where the children actually face the worst they can imagine, and they triumph.”
Kenny added: “A happy ending, to be really happy, has to be hard to come by.”
