Exhibit of the Week: ‘Children of the Empire’

The late Victorian and early Edwardian eras saw the British Empire at the peak of its power and influence.

Its young men and women were inspired to visit all parts of the globe in the strong, self-confident belief that the British had something important to offer all nations and peoples wherever they might be.  

Using photographs from the Stewart Museum archive, my article this week looks at two of Major Percy Stewart’s brothers, Arthur Stewart and his elder brother Montgomery, each of whom travelled across the world to carve out careers for themselves and can truly be described as ‘Children of the Empire’.
