Woldgate College pupil Harry was competing for The Sommerville Cup in the Junior Under 14 Double Sculls, with his crew mate and best friend Luca, also from York City Rowing Club. It was their third ever race together in a double.
They started the day with a time trial, where the fastest twelve from 23 entries (to include crews from famed rowing clubs such as Marlow, Henley and Worcester among others) would go through to the semi-final.
With huge excitement and plenty of screaming from the crowd, they qualified.
In the semi-final, we cheered them across the finish line in an amazing fourth place, only three seconds behind the winners. The final was a huge test for them both.
They finished fifth – a fantastic achievement at their first-ever championships – to be ranked as the fifth fastest 14-year-old scullers in the country.
Needless to say, we are extremely proud of them both!
There’s a very strong chance that they, and also Emily, will be selected to row at the Junior British Rowing Championships in Strathclyde in July.
