Firefighters have issued a warning to dog owners to take extra care around frozen water after a dog and its owner were rescued from a frozen canal at Pocklington.
The advice is that if your dog gets into difficulty on frozen water, never attempt to go after it as you could put your own life at risk. Call 999 instead and ask for the fire service.
The dog, called Obi, and its owner were rescued last week.
Fire service spokesman Allen Cunningham said: “If you’re a dog owner, I can’t urge you enough to keep your dog on a lead when near are ponds or lakes. No matter how thick the ice may appear to be, it’s is usually only the very top surface of the water that has frozen.”
