Man, 20, quizzed over rape

A MAN has been arrested in connection with the rape of a 22-year-old woman in a lay-by on the A1079 near Market Weighton.

Detectives leading the inquiry into the attack on 14 August revealed the 20-year-old had been brought in for questioning.

He was picked up by officers last Thursday but has since been released on police bail.

A spokesman said: “A 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault of a woman in the lay-by on the A1079 near Market Weighton.”

Police had previously released an e-fit of the attacker, who raped the woman after she accepted a lift from him.

The victim was attacked after getting a lift with a friend from a stranger outside Netto in High Street at about 2.30am.

The victim’s friend got out at the corner of Holme Road and the driver continued along the road before switching off his headlights, turning on to the A1079 and driving into a lay-by.

He sexually assaulted the woman then dropped her off in Spring Road at about 4am.

After the attack, police issued a description of the suspect as white, aged 25 to 35 with dark hair and thick, bushy eyebrows and said he was driving a small red car.
