A LEARNING centre is being reopened to give people in the community a chance to further themselves.
The centre at HMP Full Sutton is funded by the trade union, the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) and provides courses for, not only people who work within the prison system and their families, but for anyone in the wider community.
It was previously used as a peripheral link centre, but was recently relaunched as a leading centre.
Now known as the Ed Cornell POA Learning Centre, named after the category A prison’s deputy governor, it offers various courses such as IT, maths and English, as well as doubling up as a training centre for the prison staff.
Open five days a week, regional manager for the POA, Ellen Schofield said: “With it being outside the prison walls, that’s what makes it so fantastic, and it’s open to the community.
“We are extremely pleased to have it open.”
