FOUR members of a gang who stole cars and machinery from a number of local villages have been brought to justice.
The gang ran their operation as a business and sometimes sold items just hours after stealing them, York Crown Court heard.
Tim Capstick, prosecuting, told the court the gang offered to steal cars “to order” for undercover police offers, to whom they sold the proceeds of their raids and bragged about their achievements, unaware they were being targeted as part of a police sting. In total, they stole items worth £30,000.
The gang struck in Stamford Bridge, Dunnington, Wilberfoss and Elvington and also places in North Yorkshire.
One member of the gang, Duke Wayne Wharton, 32, of Kexby, was jailed for a year and eight months. Adam Winterburn, 23, of York, was sentenced for two years.
The other two men, 19-year-olds Joshua Luke Cooper and Anthony Wharton, both from York, walked free from court with two-year community orders.
