A planning application for a car dealership in Shiptonthorpe to build on land which it owns but is designated for recreational use has been given the green light by East Riding Council.

Drakes Garage plans to build a vehicle inspection building and change the use of land to the east of the garage, on York Road, for a secure vehicle storage compound and overspill car parking area for long stay.

The land, which Drakes bought from the Gravel Pits Charities Commission in 2004, is designated for recreational use in the East Yorkshire Borough Wide Local Plan (EYBWLP) and the East Riding Local Plan.

However, Drakes says it was forced to fence off the land after buying it by Shiptonthorpe Parish Council, for insurance purposes, preventing residents from using the site.
