A host of businesses and attractions in Pocklington and the surrounding area have been shortlisted for a prestigious Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Award.

The area has received no fewer than eight nominations for the tourism “Oscars”, which honour the brightest and best in this region’s tourism industry and celebrate the enormous achievements of businesses across East Yorkshire.

The area has seen two nominations for the Remarkable Newcomer award with Boxtree House Boutique B&B at Newbald joining the Platform Festival on a shortlist of six.

The Platform Festival’s nomination comes after the success of the first ever event in July 2015 bringing music and comedy to Pocklington’s old station.

Janet Farmer, the manager of Pocklington Arts Centre, which staged the festival, said: “We are delighted the festival is nominated for this award, especially given it was its first year. There was a fantastic team of people that worked tirelessly to make the event work, this nomination is recognition for all their efforts.”

The area also has a strong contingent vying for the Remarkable Self Catering award with Wolds Edge in Bishop Wilton, Nordham Cottages in North Cave and Estate Escapes in Hotham all up for the award.

Andy Gray, tourism manager of Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, said: “Once again we have been staggered by the number and quality of entries across our categories.

“The value of tourism to Hull and East Yorkshire continues to rise year on year and the quality of the visitor experience, including accommodation, is what makes us so successful.”

Other nominations from the area include The Star at Sancton for Remarkable Restaurant, Drewton’s Farm Shop in South Cave for Remarkable Taste in Yorkshire and Drewton’s Cafe for the Remarkable Cuppa award.

Tourism is a vital part of this area’s economy, contributing £771 million annually.

The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony at The Spa, Bridlington, on March 17.

In total, finalists in 13 categories have been announced with a fourteenth award, the Remarkable East Yorkshire Passion Award, being given on the night to the person considered to have made a significant contribution to tourism in the region.

Tickets for the awards evening are available, individually or tables of ten, at £49+ VAT per head. A downloadable order form is available on the VHEY website: www.visithullandeastyorkshire.com.
