HOUSELHOLDS in the local area that are taking part in a fortnightly bins collection trial are helping to break records for reducing the amounts of waste sent to landfill.
The trial involves the fortnightly collection of the blue recycling bins and the fortnightly collection of the green landfill bins.
20,000 households across the East Riding, including houses in Pocklington, Market Weighton and Stamford Bridge, are taking part.
Since the start of the trial, those taking part have reduced the amount they are sending to landfill in their green bins by 120 tonnes a month.
The amount of waste sent for recycling from the blue bins has risen by 100 tonnes a month.
The monthly recycling rate in the trial areas has consistently been 70 per cent, compared with the 60 per cent in those areas not on the trial.
