Local lady Abby Huxtable decided to take on a Year of Events in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The idea first began when her Dad was diagnosed with an advanced stage of pancreatic cancer and her family received support from the Macmillan Nurses.

Abby has always been sporty and runs a lot so decided to raise sponsorship in aid of Macmillan by doing sporting challenges throughout the year.

She chose five events, which began with the Beverley 10km race in May, completing it in a personal best time of 45.32.

Her Dad passed away at the end of May, but this spurred her on to complete her challenges in memory of him, especially as he always supported and encouraged her sporting career.

The June challenge saw Abby head over to the Lake District for the 5km Great North Swim in Windermere. This was by far the furthest Abby had ever swum in open water and although she had trained hard, was a little nervous. The event went well and Abby completed the event in a very good time of 1.21.26.

Challenge number three was back to running with the Walkington 10km, a tough, hilly course but Abby smashed her personal best to finish in time of 44.23, which was third in her age group.

The challenges were getting tougher and number four was no exception. Abby had entered Allerthorpe Olympic Triathlon, her first ever triathlon of this distance.

Abby started well, with a strong 1,500m swim and set off well onto her weakest discipline of the 40km cycle. Dropping off her bike she set off on foot, back in her comfort zone. The first 5km were good but the heat and fatigue started to take its toll, Abby dug deep and even rustled up a bit of a sprint finish.

Her final time was 2.33.21, well under her target time of 2.45.00. Her Dad would have been proud.

The final challenge is by far the biggest one yet. It is to take place on Saturday October 10 and is a 50-mile ultra marathon from the northern end of the Lake District, to the Southern end, taking in 4,000m of ascent. She hopes that by completing this she will inspire the last few donations to help her reach her £1,000 target.
