EYMS has been named as one of four finalists in the ‘Large Bus Operator of the Year’ category in the Operator Excellence Awards, which are run annually by ‘Route One’, one of the bus and coach industry’s main national trade magazines. Entries are judged by a panel with a wealth of experience in and beyond the coach and bus industry, and this particular award is for bus operators running over 100 buses, of which there are over 100 in the UK.
East Yorkshire won the same award in 2009 and was a finalist in the same category in 2011.
This announcement of the shortlists is the latest step along the road to the ‘big event’ when the winners are revealed at the eagerly awaited gala presentation evening on 2 October at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole. The event is timed to coincide with the annual coach and bus industry trade show, Coach & Bus Live, at the NEC and the presenter will be a high-profile media personality.
East Yorkshire Motor Services, which trades as Scarborough & District in the Scarborough area, is the largest subsidiary of privately owned Hull-based EYMS Group Limited. The East Yorkshire company employs over 700 staff and runs over 300 buses and coaches throughout Hull, East Yorkshire and in parts of North Yorkshire.
EYMS understands that its chief engineer, Derek Bradley, is also in the running for the ‘Bus Engineer of the Year’ award which his predecessor at the company won in 2010.
The results will follow the final round of judging and will be kept a closely-guarded secret until 2 October when they will be announced before 720 guests.
EYMS Chairman Peter Shipp said “We are naturally delighted to have been shortlisted yet again for this very prestigious award. The judges look at all aspects of the business including engineering performance, investment in staff, training, marketing, and other initiatives, and achievements during the last twelve months. So the awards are not easily won, and having seen the names of the other three finalists I know we are up against some tough competition.”
