TRYING and failing to grow something for seven years would surely make you go nuts....
Well that is what happened to the owners of the Balloon Tree Farmshop who have attempted to grow hazelnuts for the past seven summers, but have never managed it.
They are native to southern Europe, and have proved a tough nut to crack in terms of growing them at the shop near Gate Helmsley. The season is relatively short, running from September to October, and they will be on sale throughout.
Lucy Machin of the Balloon Tree explained: “Traditionally grown in the south we thought we would have a go and grow these little gems ourselves. Since they were planted in 2005, they have shown little sign of cropping, until now – seven years later. And now we have an abundance of them!”
