A CHURCH group is in talks to lease a building in Market Weighton to open a new youth centre.
Dr Alex Appiah, who is the pastor for the Living Springs Ministries church group in the town, says the group is in talks to rent out the huge top-floor room of Armstrong House in High Street, above the Netto supermarket.
Meeting weekly at the town’s Mount Pleasant School, the newly-formed church has a number of key aims within the community, one being to work with young people and help their development.
There are plans to provide games and entertainment such as DVDs, video games, table tennis, snooker and table football, as well as homework support as part of what Dr Appiah is calling the Youth Talking Point.
He feels the move could be a success because of the building’s central location in the town.
He said: “There’s not really much for young people to do. Many just hang around on streets and car parks.
“There is another youth club but it’s not well patronised and is out of the town centre.
“The entire floor above Netto has come up for lease so we’re in discussions about taking it on. We just want to provide a coherent service for the younger people and bring them the support they need.”
In an effort to forge links within the community, Dr Appiah has organised two barbecues, the first to be held this weekend.
Starting at noon at the Scout Hut, there will be free food and a bouncy castle.
A second date, when there will also be a free barbecue at the Scout Hut, will see music DJs performing and CD giveaways to youngsters.
