ROAD campaigners say they welcome a new roundabout on the A1079 as part of a major development proposed in Market Weighton.
The roundabout, with the junction at Holme Road, is part of the planning proposal for 325 homes and a new health and social centre on Holme Road.

The Action Access A1079 group is campaigning for improvements on the A-road. It said it aims to make the A1079 safer, to ease congestion and to help the local communities become more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

The group said it welcomed proposals for a new roundabout but asked that it was completed before any building work begins on the Holme Road development.

Grahame Hicks, Action Access A1079 chairman, said: "We are calling for the Government at local, regional and national level to recognise that any further significant development of new homes should only be built along the A1079 corridor subject to their commitment to ensure that there is investment in transport and business infrastructure. Without this investment, the road will become more dangerous and the region will become increasingly unsustainable as access for public transport, business and social use will become more and more difficult."

The group also raised concerns that the large number of homes proposed for the site would create increased traffic on local roads, including the A1079.

Mr Hicks said: "Employment opportunities along the A1079 are limited and therefore most people have to commute some distance to find work. There is certainly insufficient work for the residents of 325 new houses within Market Weighton and therefore it would be expected that most, if not all, would have to commute.

"In the modern world, it could be expected that 325 houses would generate in the order of 500 extra cars, most of which would be likely to use the A1079 during peak travel times."
